Community Mentors Welcome Students to First Day of School

Ten community mentors were onsite at both Crete-Monee Middle School and High School on Thursday to greet students on the morning of their first day of school.

The event gave students an opportunity to be welcomed by friendly and familiar faces and to interact with adults in the community, who wish to engage and inspire young people to do their very best this school year.

Crete-Monee School District 201-U has created a framework to ensure the success of every student. The framework includes new strategies for prevention, interventions, and safety. As part of new strategies for prevention, the district has organized a volunteer team of community mentors from Crete, University Park, Park Forest, and Monee.

“Since my son attended Crete Monee School District 201-U, I have a desire to foster community spirit and support the youth in my community,” said Janel Geary, one of the mentors and Superintendent of Recreation at the Crete Park District.

“As a mentor of one of the organizers and a father, I feel it is my responsibility to get involved within the community and set a good example for others to see,” said Richard Cobbins Sr.

Throughout the school year, the mentors will be at the schools and working with students in a variety of settings. The mentors include civic and business leaders across all corners of the Crete-Monee community.

“We are so glad to have this partnership. As the saying goes, it does take a village to raise a child and, in our case, we have four villages raising our children. That is something to be truly proud of,” said Dr. Kara Coglianese, Superintendent.
