On April 27, 2022, students at Coretta Scott King Magnet School honored the legacy of author, activist, and civil rights leader Coretta Scott King with a day of activities that began with a proclamation by Mayor Joseph Roudez, III naming April 27th Coretta Scott King Day in the Village of University Park.

On what was Mrs. King’s 95th birthday, scholars at Coretta Scott King celebrated what it means to use their talents to be global citizens and change agents like she was. There were live musical performances, classroom activities, a poetry reading, and special video messages from Monee Mayor Dr. Therese Bogs and Governor State University President, Dr. Cheryl Green.

“America is a much different place in large part to Coretta Scott King’s vision,” said Mayor Roudez. “We all need to continue to reflect on social justice and I urge you to seek her as an example,” the mayor added.

“It is only fitting today that we stand here together and not only remember her as an outstanding role model but work to emulate the work she did every day,” said Dr. Coglianese. “Her (King’s) words still ring true today, she said: ‘It doesn’t matter how strong your opinions are. If you don’t use your power for positive change, you are, indeed, part of the problem.’ And that is what today is all about – using our power to make positive change,” Dr. Coglianese said.
