The Crete-Monee School District 201-U Board of Education is charged by Illinois law and the regulations of the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) to provide and operate the 8 public schools within its geographical boundaries. It is the function of the Board to set the general school policy and, within the framework of ISBE regulations, to establish guidelines that will ensure the proper administration of the District 201-U program. Board of Education members are volunteers and receive no salary. The major function of the Board is to hire and evaluate the Superintendent of Schools.
Powers & Duties of the Board of Education Include:
- Formulating, adopting and modifying Board of Education policies, at its sole discretion, subject only to mandatory collective bargaining agreements
- Employing a Superintendent and other personnel, determining their compensation, and dismissing personnel
- Approving the annual budget, tax levies, major expenditures, payment of obligations, annual audit and other aspects of the district’s financial operation
- Letting contracts utilizing the public bidding procedure when required
- Providing, constructing, controlling, supervising and maintaining adequate physical facilities
- Approving the curriculum, textbooks and educational services
- Evaluating the educational program
- Establishing student discipline policies and expelling students
- Establishing attendance units within the district and assigning students to the schools
- Establishing the school year
- Visiting and inspecting the district’s schools
- Providing student transportation services
- Entering into joint agreements with other Boards of Education to establish cooperative educational programs or provide educational facilities
- Communicating the schools’ activities and operations to the community and representing the needs and desires of the community in educational matters
