Superintendent's Letter

July 24, 2020

Dear CM 201-U Families and Staff,

We are writing this letter to update you on the plans to reopen the District for the upcoming 2020-2021 school year. The changes in our lives due to the COVID-19 pandemic are many and have personally impacted all of our lives. Out of these experiences, we know that we will emerge in a better place as we continue to work together to support, encourage, and keep moving forward. We are grateful for the teamwork, collaboration, and leadership of our unions during this difficult time.

Safety First
After spending time this summer working with the Illinois School Board of Education, Will County Regional Office of Education, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, area superintendents, and listening to the voices of our families, students, and staff, we have developed a plan to reopen the district for school this fall. The plan’s priority is safety first. We want all parents, students, and staff to feel safe as they embark on another school year. We recognize that learning is optimal when everyone feels safe.

On July 21, 2020 at the regular board meeting, the District shared with the Board of Education the plan to reopen the school year on August 31, 2020. Our plan is to begin the school year remotely until October 19, 2020. After that time, families may choose what option works best for them. The two available options are:

Option #1: Attending school face-to-face on A/B days (alternating days of the week) while working remotely on their off-days, for a total of 5 days of instruction.

Option #2: Keep child/ren in a remote setting based upon their own family needs.

Although this is our plan based upon today’s information, staying remote for longer after October 19, 2020 could be a possibility depending on guidance from our state and local agencies. We will continue to monitor and adjust this plan as needed, so flexibility will be key in the upcoming months.

Communication with Questions
We recognize you will have many questions in the coming days. What will the new school year look like? How can you best navigate the plan within your own personal situation? To address these and other questions, we have convened our District Leadership Team consisting of administration and members from the School Leadership Teams that will work together to proactively address these in the coming weeks. Each school has also assembled a School Task Force that is working to develop building plans that will be shared with families by mid-August.

Future Forward: Reopening with Equity Resource Manual
The Future Forward: Reopening with Equity resource manual is set for release the first week of August. The manual contains specific information for both families and staff regarding new policies for safety, student and staff health protocols, personnel information, teaching and learning models, and business and facility operations. It also contains a list of FAQs, resources, and other important information to address most questions.

We will provide updates throughout the rest of the summer to keep you informed of important information and dates. Here are some important dates to keep in mind:

August 10 All buildings will be open (9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.) for staff who are interested in coming in to their classrooms to work or gather materials
August 17-21 CMEA will begin work on-site to participate in professional development and planning
August 24,25 Institute Days (Virtually streamed from CMHS)
August 26-28 Parent Academies
ACME Professional Development Training

August 31 School Begins Remotely

We appreciate your patience and support as we prepare for a safe and successful return to school this fall.

Highest regards,

Dr. Kara Coglianese
