Former Student Lauren Devore Returns to Crete-Monee to Teach Alongside Her Mentors
Lauren Devore attended Crete Elementary and Balmoral Elementary in the Crete-Monee School District 201-U until she moved away in the fourth grade. She graduated from Ball State University in 2020 and earned her Master's in 2024. Currently in her fifth year of teaching, Ms. Devore is thrilled to return to the community that shaped her upbringing. "I always dreamed of returning to the community that nurtured me," she said.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, job openings were scarce, but she eagerly applied when a 5th-grade teaching position became available at Monee Elementary for the 2024-2025 school year. Grateful for the opportunity, she believes her familiarity with the community enhances her teaching. Working alongside her former teacher, Mrs. Bajic, has been particularly rewarding. Mrs. Bajic not only fosters a positive environment at Monee Elementary, but she also serves as a fantastic mentor. Her guidance and support have been invaluable, creating a space where everyone is dedicated to helping each other succeed and inspiring others to learn from her experience and approach to education. Ms. Devore's former first-grade teacher, Mrs. Lisa Herbert, now a substitute teacher after retiring from the district, also left a lasting impression on her.
Both Mrs. Bajic and Mrs. Herbert inspired her to pursue a teaching career. "They embody everything I aspire to be as an educator," Ms. Devore shared. "Mrs. Bajic significantly influenced my decision to teach; her classroom was a place where everyone felt valued, and learning was made accessible."
Ms. Devore's experience as a student in the Crete-Monee district allows her to connect with her students on a deeper level. "I want to inspire them, just as my teachers inspired me," she said. I want them to strive for their best and look forward to coming to school every day."
Since starting at Monee Elementary, Ms. Devore has taken advantage of ongoing professional development through the school’s improvement initiatives. Regular technology training and collaboration with teachers from different grades ensure that everyone is aligned in their approach and working together as a team.
Looking ahead, Ms. Devore hopes to remain part of the community and continue her teaching career at Monee Elementary for many years. She is committed to staying current with the curriculum, building connections with her students, and positively impacting their families.
