The excitement was high on August 15 as Crete-Monee
School District 201-U staff gathered for Opening Day,
kicking off the 2025–2026 school year in style! The
CMHS NJROTC cadets, cheerleaders, dance team, marching band,
and color guard set the tone with a spirited, tradition-
filled welcome that began the day with energy and
school pride. Staff started the morning with breakfast
and a special meet-and-greet with keynote speaker
Gerry Brooks, where the first 25 attendees received a free copy of his book.
The celebration continued in the auditorium, where Dr. Eric Melnyczenko warmly welcomed
both new and returning staff. Board President Maurice Brown followed with an inspiring
reminder of the powerful and lasting impact educators have on students’ lives. Superintendent
Dr. Kara Coglianese then highlighted the district’s summer accomplishments, including:
- Construction of the high school sportsplex
- A new roof at Crete Elementary
- Middle school renovations converting the amphitheater into classrooms and teacher workspaces
- Summer school STEM projects and exhibitions
- A new SmartLab® at Monee Elementary
- The launch of the U-Net staff intranet
She also revealed this year’s theme: “Unstoppable ‘U’”, emphasizing that while challenges may
surface, the district continues to rise, aim higher, and keep moving forward. Crete-Monee 201-U
isn’t just prepared for the year ahead—it’s truly unstoppable.
Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning Dr. Ghantel Perkins then introduced keynote
speaker Gerry Brooks, who had the audience laughing while sharing meaningful insights on the
importance of cultivating a positive climate and culture in schools. Afterward, Dr. Melnyczenko
recognized staff members for their years of service—honoring milestones from 5 to 35 years of
dedication at the ‘U.’
The day wrapped up with the much-anticipated third annual Unity Games. The competition
featured lively trivia rounds—from pop culture to movie titles—followed by high-energy
physical challenges, including a game of “throw the soft burrito,” played in a dodgeball style.
Teams could also earn points by tossing the burrito at school principals, with the last-standing
principal receiving the most points. The reigning champions, the Early Learning Center, were on
the edge of their seats as they defended their title, but Crete-Monee Middle School took the lead
early on and finished as champions! The Crete-Monee Middle School team proudly accepted the
championship belt, with Principal Kokona Chrisos and other staff joining them to rally everyone
for an incredible school year ahead.
Although competitive, the Unity Games captured what Opening Day is all about—celebrating
teamwork, school spirit, and the shared commitment that makes the district truly unstoppable.
Here’s to a fantastic 2025–2026 school year at Crete-Monee School District 201-U—filled with
enthusiasm, teamwork, and achievement!
