Crete-Monee School District 201-U and Crete Community Runners Association hosted the first Juneteenth at the ‘U’ Celebration on June 15, 2024 at Crete-Monee High School. The event started with singing of the National Anthem by Carli Sawallisch followed by the Freedom Walk. At the main stage, Crete-Monee High NJROTC presented the flags followed by welcome introductions from speakers, Dr. Kara Coglianese, CM 201-U Superintendent, Valerie Butron, Crete Community Runners Association, Dr. Therese M. Bogs, Monee Mayor, and Pastor James Hunt, New Hope Christian Community Church. Crete-Monee High School Student, Terrell Henderson was the Student Master of Ceremonies who kicked off the festivities.
Performances included Crete-Monee High School Jazz Band, Governors State University Dance, poetry readings, and live music by the Sounds of Laiv Muzic. There were vendors, food trucks, and raffles throughout the day for participants.
