Letter from the Superintendent

Dear CM 201-U Families and Staff,

I hope this letter finds you safe and well during our summer break. I would first like to recognize the present realities taking place in cities throughout our nation. The racial injustice that continues to plague our country, while painful and traumatic, offers an important inflection point for us all. Rather than allow it to overwhelm us, we can choose to model the example of those who came before us, both black and white, and stood together to fight injustice. To our African-American students, families, teachers, staff, and community we want to acknowledge your hurt, anger, and weariness. Please know that we pledge to stand beside you in the fight to eradicate racism.

Sadly, as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to evolve, many of us have lost loved ones, experienced loss of employment, or have witnessed our friends go through personal challenges. Yet, we can take heart from the many moments of charity, joy, and empathy shared among our neighbors that provides us with hope that we will get through this together. Our CM 201-U family, responders, and community partners have never been stronger. Thank you for your kindness and support.

I also wanted to share with you that the District has begun work to develop our Future Forward: Re-opening with Equity Plan. Leadership is exploring several scenarios for re-opening school this fall. The model includes a mix of remote and hybrid (half of the students on-site and half remote) instruction. It also focuses on providing an equitable plan of instruction that provides additional resources to those who need it most. The plan is fluid and will allow for flexibility based on guidance from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Illinois State Board of Education, and state regulations.

The partial re-opening of facilities (with limited staff) will be based on social distancing practices, wearing masks, hand washing/sanitizing, and ventilated spaces. Phased-in re-opening of facilities will begin as early as mid-July and is for DISTRICT STAFF ONLY at this time.

A final draft of the Future-Forward: Reopening with Equity Plan is set to be released in early August. More information about the school calendar changes for the 2020-21 school year will be finalized in the upcoming weeks. We will continue to keep you updated. Please also note that Registration for Returning Families is July 6-24, 2020. Visit our website at www.cm201u.org for more information.

In closing, I wanted to share a quote from former President Barack Obama, that reminds us, “Change will not come if we wait for some other person or if we wait for some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change we seek.”

Enjoy the rest of your summer,

Dr. Kara
