Illinois State Police encourage students to become actively engaged in their communities during Black History Month

Illinois Association of Black Law Enforcement Officers (A.B.L.E.) sponsors 30 minority students at Crete-Monee Middle School to see the movie ‘Hidden Figures’

Seventh grade students at CMMS had the honor of hosting a Q & A with the A.B.L.E organization (Illinois Association of Black Law Enforcement Officers). On February 23, 2017, troopers visited the school and spoke to students about the accomplishments of African Americans, the value of education, factors that place students at risk, and the importance of diversity in law enforcement. The ABLE organization has also sponsored an upcoming field trip for the students to view the film, ‘Hidden Figures’ at a local movie theater. The field trip coincides with school-wide Black History activities.

According to a press release from the Illinois State Police, “The Illinois State Police recognizes the significant contributions African-Americans have made for the department, and their communities. Sponsorship opportunities such as this one and collaborations within the community are first hand examples of law enforcement agencies and communities can work together. . .”

The movie, which tells the story of a team of African-American women mathematicians who served a vital role in NASA during the early years of the US space program, was chosen to inspire children to reach their greatest potential. Emphasis was placed on excelling academically, being active in their communities, and turning their dreams into achievable goals through hard work. In addition, this event allowed the participants to discuss with the African-American troopers how they achieved success through hard work and dedication.

The district is extremely grateful to the officers at A.B.L.E. for their generous donation and good work in providing the inspiration and supports our students, schools and communities need to flourish!
