The special meeting of the Board of Education on Monday, February 24, 2015 began with a simple handwritten question posted on the wall above a line graph that read: “Where are we?” For the rest of the evening, some members of the Crete-Monee School District 201-U Board of Education and administration sought to answer important questions about the current state of our school district, our values, mission and direction. The discussion was facilitated by organizational consultant, Mr. Jeffery Cohn of Brave Dialogue, who has conducted over 1,000 hours of workshops, assisting boards with strategic planning, goal setting and team building. “So, what do you want to accomplish tonight?” he asked as he led the group on a review of bestselling author Jim Collins’ book From Good to Great and the Social Sectors.
In considering their priorities for the district’s new strategic plan, the Board of Education decided it will concentrate on (5) issues identified in the text:
- Defining Great – Calibrating Success without Business Metrics
- Level 5 Leadership – Getting Things Done Within a Diffuse Power Structure
- First Who – Getting the Right People on the Bus
- The Hedgehog Concept – Rethinking the Economic Engine without a Profit Motive
- Turning the Flywheel – Building Momentum by Building the Brand
The Board of Education has started the strategic planning process to replace the former plan, conceived in 2008, that expired in 2013. Mr. Cohn asked board members to build consensus around their priorities and seek agreement on the goal-setting process. By the end of the evening, the group agreed to use the current plan with modifications until 2016. The group also reviewed and discussed the current mission, goals and core values from the previous plan, which remain unchanged. There was a slight revision to the district mission statement after the group decided the statement fell short of specifying our desired outcome.
“This is not an easy process,” Supt. Cunningham said. “But I am confident that we are moving in the right direction,” he added.
The Board of Education has requested that a new Strategic Plan for the district be in place for the FY’17 school year. Planning will begin November 2015.
