During the 2010-2011 school year, Crete Elementary partnered with Holland Company to implement the Guys Read
program. Male volunteers from the local business would serve as positive mentors for 3rd-5th grade students who were considered reluctant readers. They would spend 20 minutes, twice a week, together previewing 12 different books in hopes the students would pursue reading at least one. Guys Read
is a web-based literacy program for boys founded by author, Jon Scieszka. This school year, several “gals” at the school asked if they could join in on the fun! Erin Lane, Crete Elementary Principal, and Raven Taylor, 1st Grade Teacher and Business Education Liaison, adapted the program to accommodate both male and female students who were either considered reluctant readers or said that they enjoyed reading.
“The program has been beneficial because it has allowed students to participate in reading in a book club setting. Many of the selections are high interest and have encouraged our students to want to read more,” said Principal Lane. Over 100 students participated in the Guys and Gals Read
program this school year. The program was divided into two sessions so that both reluctant readers and those that enjoyed reading could benefit from the sessions. These students met once a week for 40 minutes with their mentors from Holland Company and previewed two books and read one book over the course of six weeks. “It was a great experience and it helped me to read better,” said Dylan, a 5th grade student and Guys and Gals Read
participant. “This program would not be possible without the dedicated volunteers from Holland Company,” said Ms. Taylor. In the past two years, the CM201-U business partner has donated nearly 150 books and made a generous donation to the school to purchase new books for its library. Holland Company also sponsored a McDonald’s luncheon for all of the program’s participants. Crete Elementary and District 201-U would like to thank Holland for the support they have provided our students over the years and look forward to continuing the partnership!
