Students within our district who receive special education services have the opportunity to participate in the Special Olympics program. Crete-Monee School District 201-U has been affiliated with the Special Olympics for the past three years. We are so fortunate to have the many dedicated professionals who not only work with our special education students during the school day but who tirelessly volunteer their time and talents to help our Special Olympics athletes achieve their full potential. These volunteers are not only mentors to the students but are among their biggest fans! Special Education students enrolled at the high school have played on the school’s Special Olympics Basketball Team and practice after school on Tuesdays and play in tournaments and games against teams from other schools in the area. It is hoped that a second team will be formed next year so that students in sixth through eighth grade will also be able to participate in the games and tournaments.
With the basketball season quickly coming to an end, the athletes will begin preparing to compete in the Special Olympics Spring Games at Thornwood High School in South Holland on the first Saturday in May. This wonderful and inspiring event showcases the talents of hundreds of area Special Olympics athletes who come together to compete for medals in track and field events. Our middle school and high school Special Olympics athletes are eligible to compete in these events and the participation of our district students has increased each year. I strongly encourage all of you to attend this event and support our Special Olympics athletes! Good luck to all of those who participate and thank-you to all that support them!
