PTO Meeting Minutes
Monday, August 30, 2010
Members Present: Jessica Johnson, Sara Meadows, Shelly Porpora, Robert Watts, Natalie Watts, Jeannie Groen, Paul Kovacevich, Jen Neri, Jen Gasparro.
I. Call to Order
The meeting was called to order by Jessica Johnson at 6:34 p.m.

III. Director’s Report
Mr. Paul Kovacevich-
Mr. K. stated that the non-busing era for the ELC went pretty well. Today was the first day of school, and the staff met with Mr. K. afterwards and discussed how we can make the drop off and pick up process run even smoother. We are using the front of the building for car riders. As expected the drop off process was quicker than the pickup due to putting seat belts on or putting children in car seats. He wants to avoid two lanes of cars to keep students safe.
The grants are funded on the same level as last year for the ELC. In December, we should have received all of last year’s funds. This year is expected to be even worse. Due to this situation, the district is hesitant to bring back a teacher. However, the August dial screening created a waiting list of students. John Rogers is expecting that we can reinstate one teacher and classroom soon.
DIAL screening- A vast majority of the students that were offered a spot from the August dial screening said that the transportation was not an issue and they would be able to get their child to and from school. These students will most likely be able to start towards the end of September. Another DIAL screening will be coming up in October.
Our faculty representative and parent coordinator will be Tammi Winter.
The staff will be working on school climate and nutrition. Childhood obesity is a concern. The ELC has decided to change their policy on milk. All students will be given white milk do to the fact that strawberry and chocolate have many more grams of sugar. On Fridays, the students will have their choice. Also, snacks may not be served if they contain a lot of sugar.
The ELC budget still has some funds for family activities.
The ELC will continue to use the Creative Curriculum. Eventually, parents will be able to access their child’s portfolio and add observations to it.
IV. Board Member Reports
The PTO purchased the new front sign for the ELC entrance. It is cute and kid friendly. It should be installed around September 13th by volunteers.
We still have the position of Secretary open on the PTO executive board.

Treasurer- Shelly Porpora- Shelly is working on a budget and will have it ready for the October 4th meeting. She reported that the checking account balance is $??????????????????
Faculty Representative- Tammi Winter- Not present
V. Chairperson Report
Chuck E Cheese- 10/28 from 3-9
McDonalds- 11/17 from 5-8
Affy tapples- 10/4-10/15; delivery on 10/26
Sunny Delight- If each class collects 20 labels, they will receive 20 free books. A flyer will come home explaining this.
Boxtops will continue to be collected.
Jen Gasparro volunteered to be the Book Fair Chairperson. They will run from 11/8-11/11 and 2/7-2/11.
We still need a Field Day chairperson and a Recycling chairperson.
VI. Thank you and Correspondences-
VII. Old Business- We need to set up a bi-law committee. We have a proposal to eliminate the VP of Finance position. This position repeats the duties of the treasurer. Natalie Watts and Jen Neri volunteered to be on this committee.
VIII. New Business- The Spirit Wear will be on sale from 9/20-10/4. We will be adding pink as an option.
Impression printing made our calendar magnets. Each family will receive one and can buy an additional one for $1.
10/26- Picture Day- need volunteers.
Trees around The District- Teachers will pick classroom themes this year.
Walk-a-thon- We discussed a walk-a-thon to raise money and promote exercise to battle childhood obesity and promote a healthy lifestyle. May have this in place on the Spirit assembly on October 22nd.
Babysitting at PTO meetings- We hope to increase parent involvement by offering babysitting during our meetings. It will be held in the multi-purpose room and will begin on 10/4th. Structured activities, like a craft, will be offered. We will pay $20 a night and have some babysitters in mind.
