How can you help?
Educational research has shown that children make optimal progress with a three-fold approach – regular classroom reading instruction, targeted instruction in small groups with texts at their level, and daily at-home reading. Our suggestions are:
Read with your child every night and show that you enjoy this shared reading time together. Talk about what you read together and build your child’s background knowledge and vocabulary. Provide a literature-rich environment by having books, newspapers, and magazines available at home or through frequent library visits. Remember to use the Internet as a valuable reading tool, but be sure to always know where your child is on the Internet!
