Hi, my name is Mrs. Andréa Johnson, and I am extremely passionate about mathematics. In the past, I have spent numerous hours tutoring and teaching my peers the fundamentals of mathematics. During my undergraduate studies, I worked at a summer camp which gave me my first experience with adolescents and how to encourage their minds and challenge their mathematical skills.
I received my undergraduate degree in Mathematics with a minor in Statistics from Xavier University of Louisiana. However, due to hurricane Katrina, I was given the opportunity to finish my studies at the University of Iowa. This experience really opened up my eyes to a whole new world of numbers. At Xavier University of Louisiana, I learned mathematics from a computational point of view; where if one did not have a calculator, the department had one that you could rent. On the other hand, the University of Iowa taught mathematics theoretically. This way of teaching is all about understanding what a number is and where it comes from, the theory.
Now, I am currently working on my masters in mathematics from Governors State University and am scheduled to graduate this May 2017. This past June, I have presented some of my research for my thesis, at TODOS 2016: Ensuring Equity and Excellence in Mathematics for ALL in Scottsdale, AZ; June 2015 the Conference for the Advancement of Mathematics Teaching in Houston, TX, as well as the 2014 Faculty Summer Institute at Governors State University.
Being exposed to both sides of mathematics, provided me with a greater appreciation for the subject matter. With this new understanding and my continuous love of the subject, it will help me expose my students to mathematics in a way that makes them want to learn and grow educationally. My passion is to help others understand mathematics, and to build a stronger foundation. This stronger foundation will give them the confidence to be successful in mathematics and create opportunities to be successful in all life skills. I will be available after school for extra help to reinforce these mathematical concepts. I look forward to helping your child become the most successful individual that they strive to be.
Looking forward to an exciting year!
