Welcome Letter from Ms. Toomey
Hi! My name is Kathy Toomey. I’ve been a preschool teacher for 34 years and have been a Pre-K teacher in this district for 23 years. I worked at Hickory Elementary School for the first eight years and have been here in Crete for the last 15 years in this district.
I just want to share a few things with you about how our classroom works and my expectations for the children and their families. Since preschool is the beginning of your child’s educational journey, I believe it is my job to make sure that he or she has a positive school experience. Successful children have a positive attitude toward school and learning.
I have my classroom set up in centers that the children can navigate on their own according to their developmental readiness. While there will be many times during the day that will be direct teacher instruction, a large portion of the day will be spent in these centers. There will be activities in each center that will appeal to children whether they are 3, 4 or 5 years old. Children develop at different rates and it is important to have experiences that appeal to all levels and all learning styles.
Families are an important part of the success equation. If parents are comfortable in their child’s school, they will instill that feeling of comfort in their child and stress the importance of education to them. Parents are always welcome in our classroom, as active participants or as observers; whatever they are most comfortable doing. I expect parents to send their children to school every day and on time, except, of course, when they are ill. Children who frequently miss school get the impression that education is not important to their parents. Preschool is school.
Together we can get your child off to the start that is needed to encourage them to be life-long learners!
